Colorado transportation officials broke ground Oct. 19 on an $806-million reconstruction of Interstate 270 north of Denver. That number says more than any press release.
Kiewit Corp. is the contractor for the project, which the Colorado Dept. of Transportation says will run through 2033. The project will replace 12 bridges, including eight critical structures targeted in the first phase.
I read this as a decade-long clock, not a ribbon-cutting.
Built between 1965 and 1970, I-270 has never undergone a major upgrade, and CDOT has performed 160 planned maintenance activities and 65 emergency repairs on the corridor's bridges over the past decade.
The first phase runs through early 2030 and uses the eight critical bridge replacements to begin widening portions of I-270 to their final configuration. More than 100,000 vehicles use I-270 daily, with heavy trucks accounting for 8% to 17% of traffic, depending on location.
