Norway’s energy company Equinor has awarded Proserv a contract for the deployment of cable monitoring technology at the 402 MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm in the UK. Proserv’s ECG Business Unit will deploy its advanced monitoring technology to provide continuous visibility of cable and termination health at the project, located 32 kilometres off the north Norfolk coast, with deployment scheduled to begin in 2027.

The deal also includes Proserv’s Distributed Electrical Sensing (DES) technology, which uses existing fibre infrastructure and passive sensing to provide high-fidelity current and voltage measurements across the network. According to Proserv, the technology is expected to support earlier identification of developing cable and electrical faults, improved visibility of asset health and network performance, reduced risk of unplanned outages and lost generation, more targeted maintenance, fewer unnecessary offshore interventions, and a more efficient, data-led operations and maintenance strategy. Since its completion in late 2017, Dudgeon has produced enough clean energy to power more than 430,000 UK homes from its 67 6 MW turbines. The wind farm is owned through Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited by Equinor as operator, alongside Masdar and China Resources.

Barry Frost, Director of ECG at Proserv, said the technology gives Equinor greater visibility of the condition and performance of its electrical assets, helping identify developing issues before they become costly failures. He added that combining ECG with DES provides a richer picture of network performance and gives the operator greater confidence in the availability and security of site generation. The stated aim is to move from reactive maintenance to proactive asset management, reducing risk, improving reliability, and helping maximise the value of offshore wind assets over their operational life.

The announcement does not specify the financial value of the contract, the number of turbines or cable circuits to be monitored, or the expected duration of the deployment. It also does not detail any historical cable fault or outage data at Dudgeon that may have motivated the investment.
